The Dwarf Seahorse (Hippocampus Zosterae) includes Florida in its habitat. LiveBrineShrimp.com is offering the wild-caught Dwarfs for sale at the price of $12 each. This is the easiest of the seahorse species to care for and therefore makes a good starter from which to learn. Dwarfs can live for 2 -3 years and you can expect them to grow to an adult size of 1 inch long.
A package of 1/4 size live brine shrimp is included, free, with your shipment. Seahorses should be in their own tank so tank-mates don't eat all the brine shrimp before the seahorses. You might want to add a package of the Caulerpa for them to hitch onto.

Good Tank Mates

Porcelain Crab
(Porcellana sp.)
Most porcelain crabs and related genera are commensal in behavior. This is, they spend most of their lives on other animals and depend on these animals for their food supply and shelter. Sponges are a good example. The porcelain crabs are not parasites and do not harm the host. They are found often on anemones, soft corals, live rock and survive well in the marine aquarium.
This species is 1 inch across or less, blue to black in color. The porcelain crab's diet consists of algae and small planktonic organisms like brine shrimp.

Janitors and Algae Eaters

Flagfish/ Molly Mix
Both the Sailfin Molly and the Florida Flagfish are well known for their appetites toward algae including hair-algae. MTI has adapted these fish to live in a saltwater environment where they can be part of the marine hobbyist's arsenal for algae control.
LiveBrineShrimp.com ships only the females since the males can be agressive. The Sailfin Molly and Flagfish are raised in the MTI saltwater pond in Oak Hill Florida and are offered as a mix in order to save the cost of sorting them (this allows LiveBrineShrimp.com to sell them for only 50 cents or a quartet for $2.00). These herbivores are shipped as adults at an average size of 1 1/2 inches.

Marine Algae-Eating Snail (Tegula)
The Tegula snail is brown to black in color and grows to 1/2 to 3/4 inch long and is found in tropical to temperate oceans. This snail is not carnivorous and consumes encrusted algae of all kinds.
The diurnal behavior of Tegula is typical to other algae eating marine snails in that it grazes at night and hides from its predators during the day.
Our experience with this snail has been that it is as good at eating algae from aquarium tank sides as anything we have ever seen. We recently put 12 Tegula in a ten gallon aquarium that was so encrusted with brown diatom algae that we could not see into the tank. After three days the 12 Tegula had completely cleaned the entire tank. |
Tegula Snails, $2.40 per dozen, Orders will be packed in one pint of water. Shipping: Next-Day via DHL nationwide and DHL Ground for the Southeast.

Marine Algae Eating Snail (Nerite)
The Nerite snail is generally black to tan in color and grows to 1 inch round. This snail is found throughout the temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic. Nerite can withstand temperature variations between 40 and 90 degreees F. Normally found on rocky near-shore bottoms where they consume encrusted algae by night and hide under rocks by day. Also found in intertidal zone where they are accustomed to even being out of water during low tide.
We find this snail to be an excellent aquarium inhabitant as they eat huge amounts on encrusted algae while not bothering other inhabitants of the aquarium. Generally, they will be found near the top of the tank by day and during the night cycle they become active.

Small Cleaner Clams (Mercinaria campenchienses)
Size: Average 2 Inches
This is a very durable clam and is ideal for the home marine aquarium. In the wild it is one of Mother Nature's best water cleaners that one can find. They eat any floating or suspended items from debris to live algae (phytoplankton). If you are looking for that perfect refugium janitor, this is it.
They range in size from 2 inches to 4.5 inches in cross-shell dimension. They eat by way of having 2 siphons, one drawing in water with fresh oxygen supply and planktonic or micro suspended debris and the other siphon expels the waste products. The food that is caught on the gills is swept to the mouth or stomach.
Some scientific reports say that this clam can live up to 25 years if it has an adequate supply of food.
These clams do not desire much light and in fact they will try to burrow into the sand or mud for cover. They tolerate a wide range of temperature (35 to 90 degrees F.). |

Algae Eating Ocean Hermits
These small Ocean Hermits are found in temperate to tropical marine waters of the Atlantic and inland marine waterways. Generally, they are occupying dark to black colored spent snail shells. Collectors find these little crabs in marine grass beds. In fact, they are commonly seen crawling up and down the marine grass blades, cleaning them as they go. The color of the hermit's legs are generally white to gray. The average shell size that they are found in is 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
Due to the overheads in handling these and other small living organisms, we can only offer them in volume in order to give the best prices. |
